In this memoir, I want to take a moment to reflect on my experience as a Senior Research Fellow at the prestigious IIT Delhi. This opportunity came at a pivotal time in my life, just months after the passing of my beloved father. Leaving behind a physically and mentally draining job as an assistant professor in Anand Engineering College in Agra, I sought a fresh start and a chance to delve into more challenging responsibilities. Little did I know that this decision would lead me on a path of personal and professional growth, introducing me to exceptional individuals and unveiling new possibilities.
August 2022 marked the beginning of a new chapter in my life. I resigned from my position in Agra and set my sights on joining the Soft Robotics Project at IIT Delhi as a Research Associate. However, my lack of specific credentials prevented me from fulfilling the requirements. It was during this time of uncertainty that fate intervened, and I met Professor Sitikanta Roy from the Applied Mechanics Department, who not only understood my aspirations but also offered me the role of Senior Research Fellow. Filled with gratitude, I eagerly accepted the opportunity to work with him and Dr. Shreeshan Jena, our esteemed project scientist.
Stepping foot into IIT Delhi on a chilly January morning in 2023, I was greeted by a mix of excitement and apprehension. Initially, I struggled to grasp the project's objectives, feeling somewhat lost amidst the vast sea of knowledge and possibilities. However, with unwavering determination and perseverance, I gradually began unraveling the intricacies of our research. Though the small problem statement I worked on may not have been implemented, it provided valuable insights into the technological complexities at play.
As the only son of my parents, I have shouldered additional responsibilities since the passing of my father. Even during my tenure at IIT Delhi, I remained connected to my obligations back in Agra. It was challenging to strike a balance between my work and family commitments, but with the support of understanding colleagues, I managed to navigate this delicate tightrope.
The journey at IIT Delhi would have been incomplete without the people who became an integral part of my life during this period. From the ever effervescent and multi-talented Shaurya to the calm and collected Dr. Shreeshan Jena, I was fortunate to encounter remarkable individuals at every turn. Dr. Varnita, a cheerful presence, and the remarkable Dr. Shivangi, with her immense knowledge, left an indelible mark on my experience. Additionally, all the master's and PhD students and other members of the lab, such as Sachin and Prashant added a vibrant energy to our shared space. I might not be naming all of them as I had limited interaction in such small span of time.
While I harbored dreams of pursuing a doctoral position from foreign, I became aware of the visa regulations that would require me to live far away from my mother for an extended period. Given her current needs, it became clear that I had to reassess my plans. My only viable option was to enhance my skills and knowledge by pursuing another master's degree, preferably in VLSI or computer science. I already had acquired a masters degree from my college : Dayalbagh Educational Institute whilst working as JRF in DRDO.
With a renewed focus, I embarked on preparing for the GATE exam, which unfortunately did not go as planned. However, the BITS Pilani entrance exam proved to be a turning point, and with 125 marks in Electrical and electronics paper I secured a seat at their Hyderabad campus for microelectronics branch or VLSI. This new opportunity at BITS Pilani would serve as the next phase of my academic journey, propelling me further toward my goals.
My tenure at IIT Delhi drew to a close on the 3rd of July. Completing all the necessary procedures for my resignation and work transfer, I bid farewell to the members of the robotics lab on the 7th of July. Thanks to the thoughtful efforts of Dr. Shivangi, we gathered for a small get-together, a heartfelt moment of bonding and appreciation. These memories will forever hold a special place in my heart, as they have contributed to the colorful tapestry of my life.
As I conclude this memoir, I express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who accompanied me on this journey. The challenges, the sweet moments, and the bitter ones have all contributed to shaping me into the person I am today. I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the esteemed IIT Delhi and to have met such exceptional individuals along the way. This experience has reinforced my belief in resilience and the power of embracing new opportunities. The future beckons, and I am ready to embark on the next chapter of my life with enthusiasm and determination.
